For those who got away for the Annapolis Boat Show last weekend you may have seen Ralph Naranjo, Technical Editor of Practical Sailor, poking around boats and gear on display. Naranjo, whose story of his circumnavigation with his family in the 1970s is told in his book Wind Shadow West, was the Vanderstar Chair at the U.S. Sailing Academy and is one of the most trusted voices in sailing safety today. He will be the moderating a US SAILING Sanctioned Safety-at-Sea Seminar at Strictly Sail Long Beach, Southern Californias only all-sail boat show on October 20, during the show. Topics for the full-day seminar include rendering first aid, damage control and predicting weather at sea-essential skills for any offshore sailor or racer. The course also qualifies graduates to sail in long-distance sailing races – US SAILING certification is becoming a mandatory practice for many races across the country.

Bruce Brown: Past president, United States Marine Association; instructor for USCG 100 Ton License Program; and Transpacific Yacht Race skipper. Brown specializes in safety products (functions and operations), life rafts, marine communication, and heavy weather.
John Jourdane: Professional sailor with 50 years of sailing experience and 300,000 miles at sea; 49 Pacific and twelve Atlantic crossings; three circumnavigations including two Whitbread Round the World Races; and author of Icebergs, Port and Starboard and Sailing With Scoundrels and Kings. Jourdane specializes in heavy weather, damage control and repair, crew preparation, boat preparations.
Lee Chesneau: Professional Meteorologist; US Coast Guard STCW Meteorology Instructor; and author. Chesneau specializes in interpretation of weather fax charts, heavy weather avoidance and related navigation strategies at sea.
This cost of the program is $150.00 for US Sailing Members and Transpac registrants; $160.00 for others. Fee includes two-day ticket to the show, lunch & US Sailing Certificate mailed upon completion.
